Resource Management

Although most projects are focused primarily on the finish date or the budget, sometimes a project is defined by its resource limitations. In these circumstances, effective resource management is the most important priority of a project. In a resource-constrained project, you need to ensure that all resources are neither under-allocated nor over-allocated and that each resource is assigned to the right tasks. |

Resource Management Tools
The optimum situation is when all resources in your project are assigned at their full availability throughout their time on the project. Resources that consistently have more work than time are over-allocated. Resources which do not have enough work to fill every hour are under-allocated. Microsoft® Office Project 2007 has tools to help you with resource management. |
| |
|
Resource Management Toolbar
The Resource Management toolbar includes a variety of functions that can help you manage your resources including: Task Entry View, Resource Allocation View, Assign Resources, Leveling Help, etc.

You can use this toolbar to view resources and balance resources during your project. The Resource Allocation View on the toolbar allows you to see both the Leveling Gantt Resource Graph and Resource Usage views.
The Resource Management toolbar is not set as a default option. You will need to activate it. |
|
To utilize your Resource Management Toolbar, click Tools, Customize, Toolbars, and select Resource Management in the Toolbars Tab.

Resource Graph
The resource graph clearly illustrates resources which are over-allocated or under-allocated. The portions of the graph that are blue are within allocation restrictions. Those sections with red are over-allocated. You can resolve resource conflicts or over-allocations by using the resource-leveling feature in Office Project 2007. Leveling works by splitting tasks or by adding a delay.

To Level resources click Tools, Level Resources. In the Leveling Resources Window you will need to select Manual or Automatic. Learn more about Resource Leveling. |

Resource Usage View
The Resource Usage View displays specific tasks and the assigned resources. As with other views, over-allocated resources are displayed as red.
