Microsoft® Office Project Server 2007 has a new method for tracking non-project working time and time off in conjunction with hours spent on projects: timesheets. New in Office Project 2007, the My Timesheets tool allows an organization to account for every hour of each resource's day; including time spent in meetings, in training, on different projects, or even time off.

Microsoft Office Project Web Access is the client that works with Project Professional and Project Server to provide the Web-based user interface for enterprise project management and team collaboration functions for project managers, resources, executives, and other stakeholders. In previous versions of Microsoft Office Project Web Access, the task progress page was called the timesheet. Now in Office Project 2007, the timesheet is a different page and serves a different, but complementary, purpose from the task progress page. The My Task Page is where team members work to track and update their task assigned from one or more projects. The My Timesheet is a tool to track time spent on specific projects or tasks.

Understanding My Timesheets
The My Timesheet page is used in organizations that have specific time reporting requirements. The timesheet feature is especially useful when you need to integrate information about resource time with an accounting or general ledger system, particularly for client billing purposes. The timesheet option is designed for tracking detailed information for billable and non-billable time, scheduled and actual time, overtime, etc. If you are using, or plan to use timesheets, here are some key points to understand:
  • Your project server administrator or portfolio manager sets up the timesheet format;
  • Timesheets can be updated independently on the task progress page, or they can work together;
  • Resources can report administrative time which is used to account for non-project working hours such as meetings and classes;
  • If your organization utilizes timesheets, all resources using Office Project Web Access are associated with a timesheet manager.

Using My Timesheets
You can submit timesheets to your timesheet managers on a periodic basis based on your organization's reporting schedule.

When you log on to Office Project Web Access, your list of reminders includes any timesheets that are coming due.

Your project server administrator has already set up the information your timesheets are to include. If needed, you can modify your timesheets based on tasks, projects, or administrative time categories. Rest your mouse pointer to the right of the Click to Create link until an arrow appears and then click the arrow. The drop-down list displays the additional options.
